What is Plastic Surgery?

There is a lot of mis-information about plastic surgery. The Spectrum of plastic surgery is very wide - it's not specific to one organ. Plastic surgery is a diverse and dynamic field that combines art and science to improve both function and appearance. It encompasses a wide range of procedures aimed at reconstructing defects, repairing injuries, and enhancing aesthetic appearence

Plastic surgery is a specialised field of medicine that involves the restoration, reconstruction, or alteration of the human body. Basically plastic surgery is a problem solving branch. When certain problems of other specially are very complex - they are treated by plastic surgeons.

 The name "plastic surgery" drives from the greek word "plastikos" which means to mould or shape. Plastic surgery can be broadly divided into two main categories :

  • Reconstructive Plastic Surgery: To restore function and normal appearance to body parts affected by congenital defects, trauma, infections, tumours, or disease.

  • Cosmetic (Aesthetica) Surgery: To enhance or improve the appearance of body parts to meet the patient's aesthetic goals.

TRAINING AND EXPERTISE

Who are Plastic Surgeons?

Plastic surgeons undergo extensive training, which includes :

  • Medical School: MBBS : It takes minimum 5 years of undergraduate training plus 1 year of internship. Earning a medical degree.

  • General Surgery Residency Training: MS (Master of Surgery): 3 years of extensive general surgery residency.

  • Plastic Surgery Residence Training: MCh (Master of Chirugiea): 3 years of intense training in Plastic surgery.

  • Fellowships: Additional training in subspecialties such as cosmetic surgery, hand surgery, or microsurgery etc.
